ACA insurance (Marketplace)
Marketplace plans follow the rules of the Affordable Care Act. They may include help with the premium based on your income and are purchased during enrollment periods, or outside them if you have a qualifying life event.
Private health insurance
This refers to options offered outside the Marketplace. Some can be purchased at any time of year, but their coverage, exclusions and requirements vary greatly by product and insurer.
A private plan doesn't always cover the same as an ACA plan. Read carefully what it includes and what it excludes.
What to compare between each option
- When you can get it and whether you need a qualifying life event.
- Whether help with the premium cost exists and whether you could be eligible.
- Which services it includes and which it excludes, especially pre-existing conditions.
- Network of doctors and hospitals, deductible, copays and annual out-of-pocket limit.
- Whether it covers prescription drugs, preventive care and emergencies.
How to decide
There is no single best option for everyone. It depends on your family situation, your income, your health and your budget. Before purchasing, ask for the benefits and exclusions in writing and compare the total cost for the year.
